BCCF is seeking a motivated and experienced biologist to join our team to help deliver a diverse range of fisheries and environmental projects on Vancouver Island.  Working out of the BCCF regional office in Nanaimo BC, the successful candidate will be expected to bring a positive attitude to the role, as well as a willingness to learn, adapt and respond quickly to changing schedules and project responsibilities. High attention to detail is a must.

Position Description:

You will be responsible for an increasing number of important and complex assignments and projects under the BCCF’s Vancouver Island Fisheries Program. These assignments include various types of field work as well as administrative duties. Projects can be challenging and workloads vigorous; you will be required to provide excellent project management skills to ensure deadlines and deliverables are met. Projects are often multi-year and contracts can value at $100K or more; you will be responsible for providing progress and annual reports, as well as planning and fundraising for ongoing commitments of resources and personnel wages. Professionalism is essential as you will be dealing with multiple stakeholders and have a significant public profile. 

Essential Qualifications:

BSc Degree related to Fisheries or Aquatic Sciences

Minimum 4 years of practical work experience involving BC fisheries science, with knowledge in related field and office duties

Proficient working on physically demanding field projects in challenging environments

Excellent verbal communication and presentation skills

Experience writing funding proposals and responding to requests for proposals 

Effective data analysis and excellent technical reporting skills

Competent computer skills and experience working with MS Office

Class 5 Driver’s license, with reliable transportation

Ability to work independently and as a supportive and valuable team member

Experience employing field safety protocols 

Preferred Qualifications:

Current Swiftwater Safety Level 1 Certification

Current Electrofishing Certification

Current WorkSafeBC OFA Level 1 Certification

Restricted Radiotelephone Operator’s Certificate (ROC-M)Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC)

Small Vessel Operator Proficiency (SVOP)

Small Domestic Vessel Basic Safety (MedA3/SDV-BS)

Registered Professional Biologist or eligible for registration by the College of Applied Biology

In-depth knowledge of South Coast BC freshwater and anadromous fish stocks and their habitats

Fish habitat assessment, restoration and monitoring experience

Familiar with fish stock assessment techniques including tagging and snorkel surveys

Boating experience and competency

Experience using fisheries and field survey equipment (including sport fishing gear)

Experience with all stages of project management

Experience working with community, local government, First Nation and fish agency staff and representatives

Classification: Intermediate Biologist 

Pay Rate: $24-$30/hr (depending on experience)

Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm

Work Location: Nanaimo, BC

Start Date: February 1, 2022  

While we at BCCF do not currently have a mandatory COVID-19 vaccine policy in place, many of our clients have enacted mandates that stipulate vaccination requirements be met by both their workers and their contractors.
