The British Columbia Conservation Foundation (BCCF) is seeking youth aged between 15-30 years for two (2) seasonal positions as Cowichan River Fisheries Ambassadors.

The Cowichan River Fisheries Ambassadors will work together with BC Conservation Foundation staff, the Cowichan Lake and River Stewardship Society, Town of Lake Cowichan, and Cowichan Tribes staff to provide fish protection and river stewardship education to residents and visitors in the Cowichan watershed. This seasonal position will run from approximately June 24th – September 3rd, 2022. 

The ideal candidates for this position will be located in Lake Cowichan or the Cowichan Valley, with access to some form of vehicle transportation within the community.  Work-related mileage from the meeting location will be reimbursed at a rate of 0.55 c /km.  This position is geared towards high school or early year university students with an interest in biology, ecology, or education.

This position requires weekend work. Days off will primarily be weekdays, with a minimum of three consecutive weekdays off per week (typical days off will be Tuesday – Thursday). Specific questions about required time off & scheduling can be discussed.

The work schedule is 32 hours per week (typically Friday – Monday) at a rate $19.50/hr. The total contract length is approximately 320 hours.

Position Requirements:

  • Weekend availability, including some Long Weekend/Statutory holidays
  • An interest and familiarity with the Cowichan River
  • Comfortable working around water, with a proven ability to swim
  • Canadian Resident or legally able to work in Canada
  • Between 15-30 years old during the period of employment

Assets (non-required, but beneficial):

  • Experience presenting to the public (e.g. performing arts, drama/music, public speaking)
  • Experience working independently
  • Knowledge about the natural environment (e.g. fish, plants, wildlife, water quality)
  • An interest in learning new skills
  • A driver’s license (minimum “N” license)
  • OFA Level 1 First Aid
