The key values of this property relate to the riparian habitat complex which is comprised of cottonwood forest, mixed conifer forest and wetland plant communities.
Rated as Class 3 winter range, the Slocan Island property is locally significant as winter range for elk and moose. The property also supports a variety of migratory waterfowl as well as songbirds. The diverse riparian habitat provides a rich foraging site for Townsend’s Big-eared bats and potentially Western Screech owl nesting habitat.
Myriad over-flow channels, which intersect the island, provide important rearing habitat for Rainbow trout and potentially, foraging sites for Great Blue heron.
The channel between the island and the western bank of the Slocan River includes some of the best rearing habitat for Rainbow trout in the system.
